Project:
Groundworks to support relocation of overhead cable to underground ducts

Project name

Robins Road, Overhead to Underground power conversion

Client and Location

Aronui Power Services. Robins Road, Queenstown

Project Description

Robins Road is a busy route into Queenstown for both vehicles and pedestrians due to the large number of hostels and hotels in the area. The existing power supply network was established at a time when the areas population was considerably smaller, with very few larger vehicles traveling along Robins Road. The project was to remove multiple overhead power conductor cables to ducted power cables and to replace aged poles with 10m Busk poles.

Project Date

February 2025

Alpine Civil's works

Alpine Civil provided all groundwork support for the project. Initially pot holing was carried out to establish the exact location of all services. The area had been initially developed during a period when accurate utility supply records were recorded.

A scheduled approach was taken due to the multiple road crossings which required trenching around a road “T” junction and on an approach to a school. The location required a comprehensive traffic management plan to ensure the smooth flow of vehicular traffic and to ensure that pedestrians were able to safely walk through the area.

Over 100m of trenching was undertaken covering 5 road crossings to a depth of 1,200mm to house the 100mm ducts. Additional spare ducts were added to ensure the result remained future proof. 300mm separation was required between High and Low voltage cables and other services (Telecom, water and drainage)

All road crossings and footpaths were prepared to specification and asphalt laid.

Outcome

Road surfaces and all footpaths were returned to pre-work condition, all with minimal disruption to pedestrians and road users. The client recognised the challenging work area and appreciated the attention to detail provided by the Alpine Civil project manager and team on the ground.
