Project Description

Repairs and modifications to timber bridge, building up of embankments on both sides of the bridge.

Alpine Civil's role

Alpine Civil was contracted by Fulton Hogan to bring the bridge up to current operating and safety standards as identified and instructed by the local authority. On completion of the works the bridge was then going to be discharged to the care of the landowner.

Project Objectives

The aim of the project was to review the condition of the current structure, identify any deck timbers that required replacement. Establish a methodology of installing a suitable timber curb and handrails. The river had washed away much of the embankment around both sides of the bridge, remedial works to utilise gabion baskets and place ballast to protect the bridge structure during future episodes of high river flow.

Alpine Civil's works

Alpine Civil’s project manager developed plans to make the required changes to the structure using the best available materials to ensure that the adaptations worked well in the environment. Heavy machinery was brought in with the required ballast to support the structure and the approach to the bridge. Materials were placed to blend in with the riverbed and bank. Key lateral bridging timbers were replaced where required and the deck was additionally strengthened. Heavy 200mm x 200mm timber was installed and shaped to become suitable curbing. Posts and handrails were installed. All adjacent fencing and signage were reinstated.

The location of the bridge was rural and all materials had to be brought in on a just in time basis. Ensuring access was maintained for the landowner, their family and visitors was a particular challenge.  The onsite crew built a really good relationship with the landowner and kept them informed each day of planned activity. This approach also enabled the Crew to utilise storage on adjacent land for materials.

Outcome

The landowner was delighted with the works completed and appreciated the efforts made to keep him informed of planned activity.

Our client was satisfied that the works were completed within budget, on time and the bridge’s appearance was better than they had envisaged.
