Project Description

Earthworks, subsoil drainage, base preparation, construction of a retaining wall, 1.2m high chain-link fence with access gates ready for the installation of Tiger Turf’s NRG2 artificial playing surface.

Alpine Civil's role

Alpine Civil was contracted by Tiger Turf to prepare the existing greenfield site ready for the installation of Astroturf. The project included the full strip back and removal of the existing ground topsoil to subgrade and grading subgrade to a 1% longitudinal fall, and then the base course pavement construction to the same 1% fall. A 900mm high timber pole retaining wall was installed to one side of the development and installation of a concrete nib around the remaining 3 sides.  On completion of our scope of works, Tiger Turf mobilised to site to install the underlay and turf surface

Project Objectives

Arrowtown school currently had an area of approximately 2,800 square metres, directly in front of their Admin/Staff area building. The school utilised this area for sports, games and activities. The area was limited to summer activities as in the colder/wetter months the area was not suitable for playing on due to being a grassed area. The project objective was to support the installation of a high-quality artificial playing surface to enable all year-round utilisation of the area.

Alpine Civil's works

Alpine Civil’s project manager developed the plans and schedule to complete the site preparation to meet the requirements of the client Tiger Turf NZ. The green field required stripping back of existing materials to a depth of 250mm across almost 3,000m2 with 1000m3 with unsuitable subgrade material removed from site. A subgrade base was then built with a 1% cross fall; conduit was installed to support plans of utilising flood lighting.

A 200m concrete nib was installed around the perimeter of the section which required comprehensive form work. A 70m retaining wall was installed along the driveway side with heights ranging from 300 to 900mm.

All works were completed during a busy term time, and were finalised in line with the client's schedule and to the required quality finish.

Outcome

Tiger Turf NZ was able to install the playing surface as required to their specified standard and an excellent finish was achieved. The school was delighted with their new facility and has received positive feedback.
